Syrian and Russian warplanes have launched airstrikes targeting rebel positions in the suburbs of Aleppo. Sources from the Syrian military confirmed the news.
Earlier on Friday, rebels managed to infiltrate the city center of Aleppo in Syria's northwest during a sudden attack. This led to a resurgence of tensions in the Syrian civil war, which had been somewhat under control since 2020.
Yesterday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several affiliated armed groups carried out attacks in Aleppo. This has become one of the most serious challenges to President Bashar al-Assad's government in years. The ongoing civil war in Syria, which has lasted for over a decade, was largely under Assad's control after 2020.
Syria's Civil Defense, operating in rebel-held areas, carried out rescue operations and reported on social media that Syrian government and Russian aircraft had bombed rebel-held residential areas, a patrol post, and a school. Four civilians were killed, and six others were wounded in the attacks.
Since 2015, Russia has deployed its air force to assist Assad's government in the civil war. After the rebels entered Aleppo, Moscow announced plans to send additional military aid to Syria within 72 hours. However, it remains unclear whether this assistance has arrived.
On Wednesday, HTS and allied rebel groups began infiltrating Aleppo. Among these groups are factions supported by Turkey. By Friday, the rebels had claimed they had entered the city center, advancing through various neighborhoods.
In response to the sudden rebel infiltration, the Syrian government closed Aleppo's airport on Saturday. Sources from the Syrian military reported that troops in areas now occupied by rebels were ordered to "withdraw safely."
With the support of Russian air forces and Iran-backed Shiite militias, Assad's government regained full control of Aleppo in 2016 after months of heavy bombing and siege. Eventually, the rebels were forced to withdraw.
Rebel forces still control parts of Idlib province near Aleppo and some areas along the Turkish border.
The conflict in Syria began in 2011 as peaceful protests calling for democracy. When the government cracked down violently, it escalated into a civil war, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 500,000 people.
